Over the last few decades, swim caps have become a very popular swim accessory. They not only permit swimmers to keep their hair dry chemical-free, but also reduce drag. Unfortunately, most people do not get the maximum advantage from their swimming caps because they are worn improperly.
When used correctly, a swim cap will reduce drag and keep hair out of the eyes, mouth, and pool. Most, but not all, repel water. To get the most out of your swim cap, first make sure you have the proper size. While many caps are one-size-fits-all, others come in sizes ranging from small to extra-large.
First, make sure the swim cap its properly. It should sit snug around the head, but not be so tight that is cuts off circulation. No hair should remain outside the cap. Special versions with longer backs to handle more hair can be bought at any sporting good store.
The fabric of your swim cap has a major influence on how much effort it takes to put on. Those using latex caps have the most problems. This material has a tendency to catch and snag on hair, making it painful to take on or off. Silicone is a bit better in this area, but not perfect. On the other hand, lycra swim caps will not catch on hair. They do have a drawback, however, in that they are designed for competitive swimming and do not keep water out.
Many swimmers will wet their hair with water or apply baby powder before putting in a swim cap. This provides lubrication, allowing it to readily slide over the head. If you're wearing a swim cap to protect your hair, however, this probably isn't the best option.
A trick I tell beginning swimmers is to wear two swim caps: one made of lycra or another of silicone or latex. The lycra goes on first because it doesn't snag hair. The second cap is to provide waterproofing. The obvious downside to this solution is cost, though swimming caps are widely available for less than ten dollars so it's not too expensive. Ten or twenty dollars is a small price to pay to protect your seventy-five dollar perm.
Finally, be careful putting your cap on! While flexible and stretchy, swim caps tear easily. After all, the latex used in many caps is the same material found in balloons. Long nails or excessive force will put holes in even the strongest of swim caps.
Swim caps are a great way to keep your hair safe from water and chemicals. They also reduce drag and keep your face free of obstructions. In order to get the greatest advantage possible from this piece of swimwear, however, you must put it on correctly.
