If you are, however, wanting to replace a torn lining or just trying your hand at making a jewelry box, you will find the velvet with the backer much easier to handle . But getting a perfect fit is very difficult once the bottom of the box or the drawer is already installed. The backer is, however, helpful in preventing bubbles in the velvet and shrinkage because of over stretching during the installation process.
It is essentially a matter of personal choice; whether you want to use an adhesive backed velvet or a non-adhesive backed velvet and also depends on the glue you plan to use. The drawback in applying glue to non-adhesive backed velvet is that sometimes it can result in glue clumps because of uneven application. The only good thing is that you can use the glue you choose to be the right one for this application.
It is, therefore, highly recommended that you use only velvet with a backer with adhesive if you are planning to add velvet to an old jewelry box or if you are going to repair the lining. Especially if you are untrained and know nothing of installing velvet and if you are not equipped with the right tools. This is the easiest type of velvet to handle and if you are careful and patient, you just might be able to fix it perfectly!
