An Understanding Into The Way That The Carnivorous Plants Trap Insects
For all the talk about changing to vegetarian, there are some vegetation which wish to snack on non vegetarian food. Carnivorous plants are quite unlike their other more common counterparts who depend on light to make their food. Instead, they trap insects and other organisms for nourishment. Each of these plants have different systems of catching their prey.
When you talk of the carnivorous plants and the way they capture their prey, the strategy that first comes to mind is the flypaper trapping mechanism. Some carnivorous plants have mucilage glands which are famous for secreting a glue like material. This glue sticks to the insect or the prey and makes it unable to move. As a result the catch has a tendency to get trapped easily. This trapping technique helps to catch preys like the mosquitoes, insects, flies, fungus gnats and many more. Some plants which use this mechanism for trapping insects are butterworts, sundew plants and such like.
A very well known trapping methodology as employed by various plants is pitcher type trap mechanism. The pitcher type part of the plants enables them to catch any organismregardless of its size whether small or small. These plants are well equipped with the pitchers which can simply trap preys as big as the rodents and such like. These plants have a long chamber that eventually leads to the pitcher. This pitcher as present in the carnivorous plants is completely full of acid. This acid in turn provides help in the easy digestion of the catch which are even big in size.
Another trap mechanism which is well followed by many carnivorous plants is snap trap mechanism. This mechanism involves the plants to open their leaves and wait for the prey to sit on them. As and when the prey settles on such leaves, the leaves automatically close down. As the leaves close down the prey gets surrounded. The leaves of the carnivorous plants remain closed for a long time. The leaves in fact remains closed until the catch is absolutely digested. Though there are many carnivorous plants that use this method, there are some which are known for following this method to the maximum possible extent. Some such carnivorous plants are waterwheel and Venus Flytrap.
The Lobster Pot Trap is among the more uncommon trapping methodologies utilised by carnivorous plants. These plants offer easy access inside to their prey but do not provide them with an exit. They are pointed towards a specific direction which further, tempt the insects into entering them. once within, they are unable to discover a way out and are trapped there. This trapping mechanism is most common to aquatic plants for example the Corkscrew or the Genlisea plant.
There are some carnivorous plants which are claimed to be borderline carnivores rather than complete carnivores. They do not consume the prey, but instead absorb all the nutriments of the trapped insect before releasing them. Plants such as the Catopsis Barteroniana and the ibicella Lutea are examples of the borderline carnivore plants.
These wonders of nature are more than interesting with their carnivorous traits. In the end, it just proves how versatile and unique Mother Nature’s creations truly are.
